I love finding new up and coming bands.... something great about discovering them and following their rise to widespread fame. I caught this band a little early just before they started making a name for themselves.
My Darkest Days is a band from Toronto, Canada. Very talented group of guys. Their first big hit is Porn Star Dancing... How do you not get intrigued by a song with that name?! And of course, to my pleasant surprise upon first hearing it, this song features two fantastic cameos and one unexpected but very cool cameo.... See for yourself:
I'm making this a double feature topic today... My Darkest Days' second hit is just as big a hit as their first. So why not? Another great song these guys are churning out... I sense a bright and successful future and many albums for them if they are starting off this well! Here's "Move Your Body":
***There is an official video to this that for some reason is currently unavailable in this country... once it becomes available again, I will replace it.
This song was big in 1990, yet another hit from my freshman year of high school... Kind of a silly topic simply because I know all the words to thousands of songs! But I want to choose one that's purely entertaining where vocal performance doesn't matter on my part (old school hip-hop!)... When I hear this song, I sing every word in front of whomever I'm with, because you can't hear it and not sing along!
I like this topic... this was an easy choice, too. My very first concert I went to I was only 10 years old. My parents were going with two friends, and last minute one of them couldn't make it. So, my mom asked me if I wanted to go. I said yes! Going to a concert at 10 years old? How exciting! Who did I have the pleasure of seeing? Mr Billy Joel himself at the Worcester Centrum back in 1986. It was winter sometime and snowing that day. The show was fantastic... I knew all the songs and most all the words to them. We even had binoculars with us so I could zoom in and see Billy Joel better (our seats were far back and high up nosebleeds, but I didn't care... boy have I changed since then!). We got home very late, probably around 1:30am or something as I recall. It was snowing heavily, and my poor dad had to shovel the driveway in the middle of the night just so he could pull our car into the garage!
Well, here is the song I remember the most from that night... Big Shot:
For this topic, I'm going with a song that brings me back to my freshman year of high school. 1990-1991, riding the school bus to my high school a few towns over, about a 20-25 minute ride. We had a very cool bus driver who always played WAAF (Boston's best rock station http://www.waaf.com107.3, still running strong!). AC/DC had a new song out that year, Thunderstruck. One of the most recognizable opening sequences of a rock song you will hear.... Everyone on the bus would uuuuhhhhhh along to it (Not hum, but uuuuhhhh...). Just play the video and picture a bus of high school kids rocking out to this song.
This is one of those songs I never want to have the c.d. or have downloaded on my i-Pod. I only want to randomly hear it on the radio... that way it's that much more awesome and memorable to hear. When I do catch it on the radio (especially in the early morning), I know it's going to be a great day.
I can't help it, but this is another Dirty Dancing song.... what can I say? Let me explain...
It was not the 1963 Catskills, but 1987 Wells Beach, Maine. I was 10, turning 11 years old that summer. It was my first summer up in Maine at a campground my grandparents regularly visited. They thought it would be a great place to bring me, my sisters and my cousins for summer vacation. I met some great friends there (that I still talk with to this very day), but of all the people I met, Sean was the one that caught my eye... My nana introduced me to the whole staff as she showed me around that first day. Once she introduced me to Sean, I knew I would enjoy my summer there. I may have been a young, naive, almost-11 year old girl, but I knew instantly Sean was the cutest guy I had ever seen... We got to know each other well that summer and the future summers I spent there (several of us were regulars every year). We even became pen-pals for many years (remember when you wrote a letter before there was the internet?).
It may have been just puppy love (after all he is 8 years older than me!), but I always felt that the coincidence of Dirty Dancing coming out that same summer I met Sean was very special to me.... Sean will always be my "Johnny".
Ok, I missed a few days.... damn! Well, I'm back now. Can't be perfect all the time ;)
A song that makes me sad... I can be listening to my i-Pod and if this song were to come on, it would definitely make me sad. She's Like The Wind by Patrick Swayze... Patrick was an amazing dancer, actor and human being. And he truly loved his wife Lisa with every fiber of his being. Girls wanted to be with him and guys wanted to be him. He depicted that perfect guy in Dirty Dancing - the bad boy that actually has a heart of gold. I fell in love when I first saw him in that movie... Frankly, I didn't know one girl that didn't fall in love with him.
I miss you so much, Patrick.... still can't bring myself to watch Dirty Dancing. Still too sad.
Yet again, so many great choices.... but I have to go with my gut and revert back to my childhood. Thinking of a song that reminds me of my youth and springtime, yet also can apply to life even now. My choice....
Where's The Party? by Madonna
Just listen to what she says....
"Workin' Monday thru Friday takes up all of my time, If I can get to the weekend everything will work out just fine... That's when I can go crazy, that's when I can have fun... Time to be with my baby, time to come undone... Where's the party? I want to free my soul, Where's the party? I want to lose control..... Couldn’t wait to get older Thought I’d have so much fun I guess I’m one of the grown-ups Now I have to get the job done
People give me the business I’m not living in fear
I’m just living in chaos Gotta get away from here
Don’t want to grow old too fast
Don’t want to let the system get me down
I’ve got to find a way to make the good times last
And if you show me how, I’m ready now
Slow down you move too fast
Gonna make the good times last
Gonna let my hair hang down
I’m ready now....."
Sounds like the anthem of my life.... It was the perfect choice! With the easy, fun dance beat and the classic 80's rhythm, how could anyone NOT be happy while listening to it?
Ok, so this category isn't as easy as I thought.... And certainly doesn't deserve my time explaining as my most favorite song would, but I mustn't skip a day of the challenge. At the proven risk of being hated, my pick for least favorite song is Tom Sawyer by Rush.... My second pick, if allowed, would be 99 Luftballoons (99 Red Balloons) by Nena. Irritating, annoying, makes me want to change the radio channel immediately. No matter the choice, too many songs are worthy of this.... Enough about this one though... Looking forward to tomorrow's topic much more.
I understand they are legendary in the rock world, absolutely. But not only was I never crazy about them, but Ruby Cheeks (DJ on 93.3 KDKB in Phoenix) is OBSESSED with them and overplayed them constantly! Drove me nuts... So really, you can blame her for my hatred of all things Rush.
No need for a video of today's choice. I'd rather not torture myself!
The lover of music that I am, how could I possibly pass up a song challenge?? Of course, it's running through Facebook, the cyber world of friendship. Below is the list, and I challenge myself to actually post each day, not only my song of choice but also a video and brief commentary of why I chose it....
First up? My Favorite Song.... How could anyone on this earth possibly pick just one song as their favorite? With every genre of music out there, I can't even fathom narrowing this down to one sole choice. Impossible I say!!! How does your favorite rock song beat your favorite metal/country/pop/gospel/punk/ska/Christian/new age/rap/hip hop song? Apples and oranges....
Well, leave the impossible to me. My all-time favorite band is Queen. The unmatched magic of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor & John Deacon.... Freddie's vocals? Brian's unparalleled guitar skills? John's killer bass? And not to mention Roger's incredible drums (who could forget his falsetto!)... They are truly a match made in rock & roll heaven.
